Subject: | Municipal Tax Credit for Volunteer First Responders |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will authorize local governing bodies to provide an earned income tax credit and a property tax credit to qualified, active volunteer first responders. Our Commonwealth’s communities are served by volunteer fire, ambulance and rescue companies which contribute approximately $6 billion dollars in free emergency services to our state. However, the recruitment and retention of these volunteer first responders remains a very significant challenge for localities all across Pennsylvania. Extending an earned income tax and/or property tax credits to volunteer first responders will create an important volunteer recruitment incentive. Under this legislation, municipalities would have the power to set the amount of the tax credit and the guidelines of the program. Municipalities would not be required to participate in the program; it would be purely optional. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
