Subject: | Resolution Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution honoring and supporting the goals of the United Nations (UN) and commemorating the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the UN on June 26, 1945. Since its inception, the UN has grown from 51 members to nearly 200. While the world has changed significantly in the last 70 years, the goals of the UN remain the same: maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations, and promoting social progress, better living standards, and human rights. As legislators, as well as humans, I believe we should stand together in support of these endeavors. Recognizing the devastation of World Wars I and II, the Charter sought to "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind," as well as to "reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small.” Please join me in sponsoring this resolution honoring and supporting the goals of the UN and commemorating the 70th anniversary of the signing of its charter. |
