Subject: | Requiring Child Day Care Providers to Install Safety Guards on Doors |
In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation requiring child day care providers to install safety guards on doors and directing the Department of Human Services (DHS) to promulgate regulations that provide specifications for door safety guards in these facilities. Data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System estimated that 1.4 million children 17 years of age or younger in the United States sought and received treatment in the emergency department for a door-related injury from 1999 through 2008. This averages to approximately 1 door-related injury every 4 minutes in the United States. Further, the study indicated that “pinch in the door” (54.8%) and “impact to the door” (42%) were the most common door-related injuries. The use of door safety guards may prevent these types of injuries from occurring among young children, especially those attending day care. Door safety guards are intended for the hinge side of the door, and when properly installed, help prevent children from inserting their finger or hand in the area, therefore avoiding potential injury such as amputation or laceration. Please consider joining me in cosponsoring this legislation which will help keep Pennsylvania children attending day care even safer. |
