Subject: | Resolution: National Flag Day (6/14/16) |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that designates June 14, 2016 as “National Flag Day” in Pennsylvania. Flag Day is celebrated each year on June 14th. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which occurred on that day in 1777 by Resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. Describing the new flag, the Congress wrote, “White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.” Over time, the flag’s design evolved to keep pace with our Nation’s development and growth, but its meaning as a symbol of democracy and freedom has remained constant. After three decades of State and local celebrations, President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day by proclamation in 1916. Flag Day became a national observance by Act of Congress in 1949 and was signed into law by President Harry Truman. On August 3, 1949, to commemorate the adoption of the American flag, Congress designated June 14th of each year as “Flag Day.” On June 14, 2016, Americans will observe the 239th birthday of the United States flag. Please join me in recognizing “National Flag Day,” which allows the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to reflect on the flag’s rich history and its meaning to Americans and people around the world.
