Subject: | Resolution Commemorating the Centennial of the Irish Easter Rising |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the centennial of Ireland’s Easter Rising, which ultimately led to independence for Ireland after centuries of British rule. The resolution recognizes the brave men and women who seized multiple key locations in central Dublin, proclaimed an independent republic in Ireland, and held off an overwhelming force of British manpower and heavy weapons for a week before the insurrection was put down. Though the rebellion initially did not have the support of a majority of the Irish people, Britain’s heavy-handed response of mass imprisonment and the torture and execution of the Easter Rising’s leaders rallied the nation to push for independence, especially given the continued delay of the long-awaited Home Rule bill. The 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising has special resonance in the United States because of the extraordinarily close historical and contemporary ties between our two nations. The U.S. is home to more than thirty million people of Irish descent who have made tremendous contributions to American life and who provided financial, logistical, material and moral support to Ireland’s independence movement, including the Easter Rising. The United States’ determination to govern ourselves freely and fairly in a republic has inspired generations of Irish people to fight for their own political and civil rights. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to commemorate the centennial of the Easter Rising which took place April 24 through 30, 1916. My resolution will honor those who fought so bravely for their freedom against all odds and ultimately prevailed. |
