Subject: | CORRECTION - Co-Sponsorship - Juneteenth Independence Day |
This was originally circulated on May 24, 2016, however the language was slightly changed. Please view the attachment. If you previously co-sponsored this resolution, you will need to add your name again. I apologize for any inconvenience. Imminently, I will introduce legislation to commemorate June 19, 2016, as Juneteenth Independence Day in the Commonwealth. As many of you know, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in all regions of the United States. Resolutions have been introduced over the decades to recognize Juneteenth. In 2015, Representative Helm introduced HB664 to provide for the annual designation and holiday observance of the third Saturday in June as “Juneteenth National Freedom Day” in this Commonwealth. HR664 passed the House and is currently in the Senate Appropriations Committee. Consequently, my legislation will provide for the designation of June 19, 2016, as Juneteenth Independence Day to commemorate and honor the resilience, courage, and determination of the enslaved, their descendants, and all Americans who embody Dr. King’s quote “None are free until all are free!” Please join me as a sponsor of this legislative proposal. |
