Subject: | Amending the Local Option Small Games of Chance Act to require a portion of 50/50 drawings at major and minor league sport's events to be donated to volunteer fire companies and ambulance services |
In 2013, the General Assembly made several changes to the Local Option Small Games of Chance Act, which included the authorization of 50/50 drawings at major and minor league sports venues to raise funds for charitable organizations. While major league 50/50 drawing have been successful fundraising tool for nonprofits, I am discouraged that some of the sporting venues do not use this fundraising option to benefit their local communities. I, along with several other members of the House, supported this legislation believing that our local volunteer fire companies would benefit from these drawings and am disappointed that volunteer fire companies are not receiving the donations that were expected. In order to ensure that these 50/50 drawings benefit our community volunteers, I will be introducing legislation in the near future to require major and minor league sports teams to use a portion of their 50/50 drawing proceeds to benefit volunteer fire and EMS services.
