Subject: | Expanding the Use of Red Light Cameras to Make Our Roads Safer |
For decades, Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia was considered one of the most dangerous roads in America thanks to its size and the number of drivers who exceeded the speed limit and sped through red lights along the road. In 2002, this legislature took action by enacting a red light camera pilot program aimed at reducing the number of serious accidents and fatalities that occurred far too often at select intersections on the boulevard. The placement of red light cameras in these areas led to a reduction in accidents, leading the program to be extended and expanded several times over the past 20 years. Red light cameras utilized along Roosevelt Boulevard and throughout Philadelphia and certain surrounding municipalities have proven themselves to be effective tools for changing unsafe driving behaviors. I believe it is time that we make the program permanent and give all municipalities throughout the state the option to implement this technology at their discretion. The data is clear – red light cameras save lives. I hope you will join me in this effort to improve the safety of our roads and intersections by co-sponsoring this legislation. |
