MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 24, 2024 11:06 AM
From: Representative Benjamin V. Sanchez
To: All House members
Subject: PFC Helmut Boehm Memorial Road

This past June, the community of Rockledge in Montgomery County sadly lost one of its finest citizens, Helmut Boehm who had celebrated his 99th birthday a few months earlier. Mr. Boehm immigrated to the Philadelphia area from Germany at the age of 3 with his family; after graduating from Olney High School, Mr. Boehm was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, in which he served as an Ambulance Orderly in the 479th Motor Ambulance Company and was promoted to the rank of Private First Class.

Mr. Boehm began his service during Operation Overlord in Normandy, France, and saw action in Northern France, Belgium, at the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and in Germany. He was tasked with driving ambulances into combat areas to transport wounded soldiers from the battlefield to evacuation airstrips and field hospitals, and provided emergency treatments until the wounded were safely evacuated. He continued providing these critical duties to his fellow soldiers until the liberation of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp near the end of the war. For his voluntary participation in a night mission to evacuate wounded soldiers trapped behind enemy lines during the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest in November 1944, Mr. Boehm was awarded the Bronze Star.

In honor of the late Mr. Boehm and his exemplary service to our country, I propose that the entire portion of Pennsylvania Route 232 within the Borough of Rockledge in Montgomery County be designated as the PFC Helmut Boehm Memorial Road. Please join me in this effort to ensure that Mr. Boehm’s life-saving and heroic efforts during World War II are never forgotten by his community.

Introduced as HB2614
