Subject: | Thrift Month |
I will soon introduce a resolution declaring January 2015 as “Thrift Month” in Pennsylvania. National Thrift Week originally started on Jan. 17, 1916, in honor of and on the birthday of Benjamin Franklin, who is viewed as the “American Apostle of Thrift.” But where this event was once celebrated with schools opening and administering saving accounts for their students and with a general recognition of the value of hard work and discipline, neither this event nor these values are fully celebrated or appreciated to the extent they once were. My resolution calls for declaring January “Pennsylvania Thrift Month" and for urging individuals, families and government at all levels to exercise thrift and fiscal responsibility. |
