Subject: | Legislation – Establishing a State Board of Professional Music Therapy Licensure |
In the near future, Senator Folmer and I plan on introducing legislation that would create a State Board of Professional Music Therapy Licensure. Music therapy is a recognized and validated medical therapy that uses music as the stimulus to achieve specific therapeutic objectives. It is estimated that music therapists currently serve approximately 41,000 Pennsylvania residents each year. Music therapists serve clients with a variety of clinical needs, including persons with Alzheimer's Disease, autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, cerebrovascular accidents (Strokes), dementia, depression, Down's Syndrome, hearing impairment, Parkinson's Disease, post traumatic stress disorder, terminal illness, traumatic brain injury, and visual impairment. The legislation is similar to current licensing statutes, and will offer a comprehensive system to issue licenses, develop regulations, and administer the provisions of the Act. Please join us in supporting this legislation to protect the citizens of Pennsylvania and to increase access to quality music therapy services. |
