MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 29, 2015 09:59 AM
From: Senator Rob Teplitz
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution – Honoring the 175th Anniversary of the Borough of Newport

In the near future, I plan on introducing a resolution honoring the 175th anniversary of the Borough of Newport.

In 1789, Paul Reider purchased a tract of land on the banks of the Juniata River from David English. Over time, Reider’s descendants founded the town of Reider’s Ferry. Due to its popularity as a river village that hosted flatboats from the Juniata, the town became known as Newport. In 1840, Newport was incorporated as a borough. Both the bridge in Newport and Newport Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Notable Newport residents include:
  • Billy Cox, a town native who played third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooklyn Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles in the 1940s and 1950s;
  • Jonathan Clay, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor recipient, who was injured on October 9, 2006 during a tour of duty in Afghanistan by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG); and
  • Henry C. Thatcher (1842-1886), the first Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court.
The year 2015 marks the 175th anniversary of the founding of the borough of Newport. A celebration of this historical event will be held from July 19 through 25 and will feature many activities and events to commemorate Newport’s important milestone.

I hope you will join me in honoring the history, the achievements, and the people of the Borough of Newport by co-sponsoring this resolution.
