Subject: | Constitution Week in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution recognizing September 17 to 23, 2015 as “Constitution Week” in Pennsylvania. The United States Constitution establishes the liberties, freedoms and inalienable rights we as Americans enjoy and has served as the framework for the establishment of countless foreign governments over the years. This celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Constitution Week is intended to: (1) emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; (2) inform people that the Constitution is the basis for the United States’ great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and (3) encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, I ask that you join me to cosponsor this resolution which is intended to commemorate America's most important historical document. |
