Subject: | Fibromuscular Dysplasia Month |
In the near future I will propose a resolution designating March 2016 as Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. FMD is a rare disease that primarily (90 percent) affects women between the ages of 20 and 60years old. About four percent of women are believed to be impacted by it. FMD causes abnormal cell growth in arterial walls that leads to blood pressure complications including aneurysms and dissections (tearing) of the vessels. Because many of its symptoms are common to other causes, it usually is detected only after a serious incident has occurred, or accidentally in the course of other medical examinations. Because it is so rare, patients and their families typically bear the burden for educating others, including physicians, and raising funds for awareness and research. Please consider adding your recognition to the importance of raising awareness for this rare but serious disease. |
