Subject: | Female Veterans Day |
I will shortly introduce a resolution in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Commission on Women to recognize March 30, 2016 as "Female Veterans Day". There are more than 71,000 female veterans living in Pennsylvania today. While women have been integrated into our Armed Forces only since 1948, they have served with stout commitment unofficially, in disguise, and in auxiliary units since the very beginning of our nation. Today, they are fully integrated into every branch of the services, risking their lives and well-being with dedication and courage as 10 percent of all military personnel, including dozens who serve as general and admiral officers. Unfortunately, large numbers of them also report being subjected to sexual assault, and female veterans have a 400 percent greater likelihood of homelessness than male veterans do. The House of Representatives will be considering a similar resolution, and I hope you will join in supporting this deserved recognition of our female veterans. |
