Subject: | Recognizing July 2016 as Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month |
I will soon introduce a resolution recognize the month of July 2016 as Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. Uterine fibroids, clinically known as uterine leiomyoma, are the most common benign tumors of the uterus and affect up to 80% of women under the age of 50. Nationwide, 10 to 21 million women suffer from uterine fibroid and they are three to five times more common among African-American women than among women from other ethnic groups. According to the National Uterine Fibroid Foundation, 600,000 hysterectomies are performed annually in the United States with approximately 177,000 to 366,000 of these procedures arising from uterine fibroids. Please join me in supporting this resolution to encourage increased awareness and education relating to uterine fibroids and foster the health and well-being of residents of this Commonwealth by engaging in a conscientious commitment to advancing women's health. |
