Subject: | Recognizing September as Recovery Month |
This year marks the 27th observance of "Recovery Month", an annual national observance of the need to prevent, treat and recover from substance abuse and mental illness. In addition to the lethal flood of opioid abuse that has torn apart many thousands of homes and families in our Commonwealth in recent years, the most recent report by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicates that in 2014 about one in five Pennsylvania young adults used illicit drugs and a similar proportion of Pennsylvania teens reported binge-drinking at least monthly, with a majority of teen minors surveyed saying they thought it was acceptable to have five or more drinks at a time at least weekly. Recovery Month is a statement to reinforce the essential truth that behavioral health is essential to overall personal well-being, and that prevention and effective treatment work to help people recover from mental illness and substance abuse. I hope you will join me in making this statement on behalf of the Pennsylvania Senate to all Pennsylvania households.. |
