Subject: | National Move Over Awareness Day (October 19) |
In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution designating October 19, 2024, as National Move Over Awareness Day in Pennsylvania. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of moving over and slowing down for emergency vehicles and personnel on the road which protects the lives of emergency responders, law enforcement officers, tow truck operators, and road workers who serve on our roadways. The ‘Move Over’ law codified under Senate Bill 1281 and enacted as Act 105 of 2020, passed unanimously and strengthens the safety protections for individuals working on our highways. This legislation, which we introduced to address these critical safety issues, requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching an emergency response area, including vehicles displaying flashing lights, emergency responders, and disabled vehicles. Violators face increased fines and penalties, emphasizing the serious nature of these offenses. Despite the passage of this vital legislation, too many roadside incidents continue to occur due to drivers failing to follow this critical safety law. Designating a National Move Over Awareness Day in Pennsylvania will serve as an annual reminder to drivers of their responsibility to keep our roadways safe for everyone. By increasing public awareness, we aim to prevent tragedies and ensure that those serving our communities can do so without fear for their lives. Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution to raise awareness and promote roadside safety and protect the lives of our first responders, highway workers, and fellow motorists. |
