Subject: | Recognizing April 2017 as “Autism Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing April 2017 as “Autism Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. As many of you know, autism is a complex neurological developmental disorder which affects a person’s ability to learn, interact, and communicate with others. Autism is a spectrum disorder, affecting individuals differently and to varying degrees. Approximately 1% of the world population and approximately 1 in 68 births in the United States is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, an increase of 119 percent since the year 2000. While there is no cure for autism, early diagnosis and intervention have proven to be extremely important. This is why awareness and education must continue to be a priority for our commonwealth and our nation. When detected early, symptoms can be significantly improved with treatment, and in some cases, can be completely overcome. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution, as we continue to search for ways to support those afflicted with this disorder, as well as their families. |
