Subject: | Second Class County Employees -- Retirement with Disability |
In the near future, I intend to reintroduce legislation that would allow certain employees of a county of the second class (Allegheny) to retire early in the event of a permanent mental or physical disability incurred in the line of duty. My legislation would amend the Second Class County Code to provide police officers, firefighters, county detectives, sheriffs and deputy sheriffs with a retirement allowance and service increment should they suffer a disability in the line of duty regardless of their age or years of service. Each day, these workers put their lives in danger to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. With that risk comes the very real possibility that they may become permanently mentally or physically disabled as a result of an injury sustained on the job. Unfortunately, the Second Class County Code currently does not provide financial protections should these public servants become unable to continue their employment. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
