Subject: Firefighter and Emergency Service Training Legislation

I’m sure that many of you are aware of the drastic decline in the ranks of emergency volunteers in most communities. I will be reintroducing legislation that would amend Section 1550 of the Public School Code regarding Firefighter and Emergency Service Training. The purpose of this legislation is to encourage young individuals to become involved in and join their local fire and EMS services.

Currently Section 1550 provides that school districts may offer firefighter and emergency service training as credit-earning courses to students age sixteen (16) or older. My legislation would require the student to also be a member of a volunteer fire department or a volunteer ambulance service. In addition it changes the burden of the cost of transportation and course fees and materials. Currently the law mandates schools to cover these costs, but my legislation takes the burden off the schools. My hope is that these changes will encourage students to join their local fire and ambulance services, and encourage schools to offer the training through these respective organizations.
