Subject: | Prohibiting School Board Members from Voting on Union Contract if Relative Belongs to Bargaining Unit |
In the near future, I will introduce legislation to ensure that a school board member would not be allowed to vote on a union contract if a relative belongs to the bargaining union covered by that union contract. A close relative is defined as a household resident regardless of them being related or not, a spouse, child, parent or sibling of the school board member even if they do not live in the same household. The majority of school board members eligible to vote would approve the union contracts. For example, if a nine member board had two board members with relatives as defined above in a particular school district, there would only be seven board members eligible to vote on union contract. Therefore, they would need four votes out of seven to approve the contract. School board members who are not eligible to vote on the union contracts would still be allowed to vote on all other items that they are currently allowed. School board members would be required to declare that they are abstaining from the vote on the union contract due to a “close relative” conflict. I would greatly appreciate your support of this legislation. Thank you very much for your consideration. |
