Subject: | Resolution recognizing October 2017 as Disability History and Equality Month in PA |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing October 2017 as Disability History and Equality Month in Pennsylvania. An estimated 294,880 Pennsylvania residents, approximately 16.8% of the State's population age 5 and over, have a disability. Research has shown that students with disabilities experience greater academic and social challenges than non-disabled students and in order to ensure the full inclusion of all people into society, there is a need to increase public awareness of the history of disabilities and the disability rights movement, and the promotion of equality for all. Recognizing October as 'Disability History and Equality Month' and encouraging Pennsylvania schools to include instruction and events focusing on disability history, people with disabilities and the disability rights movement will help reduce stigma of disability and reduce bullying of people with disabilities by providing students with the tools to become allies. Please join me in sponsoring this important legislation. Thank you! |
