Subject: National Teen Driver Safety Week
 
National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW) is a federally designated time each year to raise awareness of teen driver safety topics and to seek solutions to unnecessary teen deaths on the road. It occurs this year from OCTOBER 15 through OCTOBER 21, 2017. Let us come together and focus Pennsylvania’s attention once again on this serious issue.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults in the United States, and many of these deaths are preventable.

The theme for this year is “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” One of the major factors that increases the risk of a crash is impaired driving, and research shows that most teens know they are vulnerable and are well aware of the many risks of driving. To focus on texting and cell phone use while driving can be a powerful message for teens.

Crashes and deaths occur because of any or all of the following:
  • A driver distracted by cell phone use and/or other passengers
  • A tired or fatigued driver
  • A driver experiencing strong emotions
  • A driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs
In Pennsylvania in 2016, there were 46 teen driver fatalities and there were 4 deaths among 16 year old drivers. All were young people loved by their families – good kids full of dreams and hopes for long, meaningful lives. We all know of too many teen crashes resulting in death that have occurred in our own legislative districts.

Through this resolution we can recognize “National Teen Driver Safety Week” and encourage the people of Pennsylvania to engage and empower licensed teen drivers in the Commonwealth to become safe skilled drivers. Please join me by adding your name to this resolution.
