Subject: | Dysautonomia Awareness Month |
In the immediate future, I will be introducing a resolution designating the month of October 2017 as “Dysautonomia Awareness Month”. Dysautonomia is a group of medical conditions that result in a malfunction of the automatic nervous system, which is responsible for essential bodily functions such as respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, digestions, and temperature control. As dysautonomia can occur as a secondary condition in association with other diseases, as well as a primary condition, it is difficult to determine precisely how many people this disease has affected. However, one form of dysautonomia, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, is estimated to have affected 11 million people worldwide. There is currently no cure for dysautonomia, but increasing awareness of this debilitating disease can help patients be diagnosed earlier. Please join me in recognizing the efforts of the professional medical community and the patients and family members who are working to educate our fellow Pennsylvanians about dysautonomia by co-sponsoring this resolution. |
