Subject: | Resolution – “Earth Week” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that would designate April 22nd to April 28th, 2018, as “Earth Week” in Pennsylvania. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, in response to a growing environmental movement that was concerned about the continued deterioration of the natural environment. The annual observation of Earth Day continues to bring together communities, organizations, and individuals from around the planet to urge support for environmental initiatives and programs. Earth Day is now considered to be the largest secular observance in the world and is celebrated by more than a billion people worldwide. While Earth Day remains an important day to focus on the need to protect the environment, many college campuses and environmental groups now dedicate an entire week to Earth Day activities and, thus, unofficially celebrate “Earth Week.” I believe Pennsylvania should follow the lead of these institutions and organizations in order to raise awareness of the environment and increase conservation-related educational opportunities. Please join me in supporting the observance of “Earth Week” in Pennsylvania. |
