Subject: | Alzheimer's as a Public Health Issue Resolution |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution to request the Secretary of Health declare Alzheimer's disease and other related dementias as a public health issue. We are certainly all aware of the baby boomers beginning to turn 65 in 2011. That means we are set for a drastic increase in our senior population. With our older adults living longer due to medical advances, it increases the need for long-term care services and supports, especially for those requiring memory care in our communities and facilities. By making Alzheimer's disease a public health crisis, we are bringing more attention to the issues faced by those living with dementia to the forefront of the Commonwealth's priorities. There is a need for more dementia-friendly communities, more assistance for caregivers, more education for first responders and physicians, and earlier diagnoses for the family to prepare for financial and legal decisions. Please join me in creating more awareness of Alzheimer's disease and other related dementias by cosponsoring this resolution. As part of creating more awareness, I urge all of you to add the Alzheimer's 24/7 Helpline to your consituent outreach: 1-800-272-3900. |
