Subject: | Reducing Surface Impact from Unconventional Gas Wells |
We urge you to join us in co-sponsoring legislation that would reduce the surface impact from drilling an unconventional gas well. If enacted, this legislation could also trigger increased payments for landowners whose leaseholds might not have otherwise been profitable to produce given that a well typically costs $4-6 million. Recent advances in drilling technology make it possible to produce significantly larger drilling units from a single well pad, which historically would have required multiple well pads on the surface. This technology is a win-win for both the environment and landowners, and as policy makers, we should encourage its use. Our legislation will make it clear that, in order to take advantage of the utilization of this new technology, all property being produced must be under a valid lease. |
