Subject: | Funding to Cities That Provide Supervised Safe Injection Sites |
It has been brought to my attention that the City of Philadelphia is considering the establishment of “supervised safe injection sites”, for the purpose of overseeing the injection of heroin. Rather than assisting individuals who are addicted to this powerful drug, the City plans to enable its continued use by individuals who desperately need help curbing their addiction. While I am in complete support of providing measures to assist those that are addicted, I believe this approach is irresponsible and quite frankly, ridiculous. For this reason, I will be introducing legislation that would prohibit any municipality, including those who are home rule, from receiving appropriations from the Commonwealth if they approve policies to provide supervised safe injection sites. Instead of providing taxpayer dollars to municipalities who enable users, we should use those funds in a more responsible manner rather than foster the continued use of this deadly drug. The opioid epidemic is a major problem that faces the Commonwealth. However, approving and funding safe injection sites is NOT the solution. I urge you to add your name to the list of cosponsors of this important legislation. |
