Subject: | Child Custody: Strangulation Offense |
The expressed purpose of our family court system is to ensure the best interest of every child is given due consideration when allocating custody amongst guardians. Part of this mission to place a child in a healthy and safe environment is the consideration of prior offenses in a guardian or household member’s background. Of particular importance are any and all crimes of violence. To that end, in the near future I will be introducing legislation that adds strangulation to the list of offenses considered in child custody hearings. Since the crime of strangulation did not expressly exist in statute until 2016, my legislation simply ensures the offense is given due consideration in child custody hearings. I hope that you will join me in sponsoring this important legislation. |
