MEMORANDUM To: All House Members From: Representative Madeleine Dean Date: September 21, 2018 Subject: Perfluorononanoic Acid (PFNA) in Drinking Water In the very near future, I will be introducing legislation that would create a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for PFNA in drinking water at 13 parts per trillion, the same maximum level provided for under regulations recently passed in New Jersey. Perfluorinated compounds, of which PFNA is one of the most toxic, are used to create such things as Teflon, Scotchgard, and firefighting foams. When toxic PFNA gets into our drinking water, exposure in levels over the maximum threshold over many years can cause problems with the liver, kidneys, and immune system. Exposure to PFNA can also cause reproductive problems in men and developmental delays in infants. I believe it is imperative that we test for PFNA in our drinking water to make sure that this toxic compound is kept at safe levels for the health of our citizens now and for generations to come. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
