Subject: | Smart Guns |
In the near future, I will reintroduce legislation that will require every firearm sold in Pennsylvania to be a “smart gun” once the technology becomes available. Smart guns rely on dynamic grip technology that has been developed by professors at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. This technology measures the size, strength and structure of an individual’s hand along and his or her reflex movements. The smart gun observes how the person squeezes the grip and trigger to produce a unique individualized pattern. Embedded sensors in the gun can read and record the size and force of the user’s hand during the first seconds after the trigger is squeezed. This technology will limit the use of a smart gun to a grip the smart gun recognizes. Previously, this legislation was introduced as Senate Bill 931 from the 2011-12 legislative session. The co-sponsors of SB 931 were Sen. Tartaglione and Sen. Leach. I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this important legislation.
