Subject: | Commemorating February 19th as the Battle of Iwo Jima Remembrance Day |
Next week, we will be introducing a resolution commemorating the 72nd Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. This campaign began February 19, 1945 and ended 36 days later. By capturing Iwo Jima, the distance of B-29 raids could be cut in half and escort fighters could protect the bombers. During this battle, the United States Armed Forces suffered the loss of 6,821 troops. More than 19,000 were wounded or captured. Many of you will be familiar with the historic photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. This photograph was taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. It depicts five United States Marines and a United States Navy corpsman raising a United States flag atop Mount Suribachi. Please join us in honoring those who were a part of this courageous campaign. |
