Subject: | Resolution Condemning Anti-Semitic Acts |
Upon our return to Session in March, I will be introducing a resolution condemning the recent acts of hate against the Jewish community in Pennsylvania and across the nation. Prior to Monday I was witness to such acts in areas outside of South Central Pennsylvania. This past weekend nearly 100 headstones were vandalized in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, a Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia’s Wissinoming neighborhood. Additionally, a synagogue in Philadelphia has experienced repeated vandalism, and headstones in a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, were vandalized last week. On Monday, however, a bomb threat was called into the York Jewish Community Center (JCC), as well as the Harrisburg JCC. Needless to say, these particular acts hit close to home and affirm the need that together, we must stand up against such hatred. As is the case with our local YMCA’s, Jewish Community Centers are places utilized for exercise, childcare, and gathering space for meetings and events. These acts of hate are threats to the safety of our neighbors, young children, and quite frankly, our fellow Americans. While we are all entitled to our opinions and freedom of speech, actions like those carried out toward our Jewish Community Centers, synagogues, and cemeteries are unconscionable and should be condemned. Please join me in sponsoring this resolution condemning these anti-Semitic actions that are increasingly plaguing our Commonwealth and our nation. |
