Subject: | Distracted Driving Awareness Plate |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation to create a Distracted Driving Awareness Plate for passenger cars and trucks to help advance public education and outreach on the dangers posed by distracted driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving.” Examples of distracted driving include, but not limited to, texting, eating, grooming and talking to passengers. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation maintains and publishes crash data, including distracted driving fatal crashes. In 2015, there were 14,810 crashes involving a distracted driver. Additionally, from 2011-2015, there were approximately 280 distracted driving fatal crashes or an average of 57 fatal crashes per year – a statistic that has remained stagnant in this period. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to encourage safe driving habits and to improve traffic safety throughout the Commonwealth’s transportation system.
