Subject: | Korean War Armistice Agreement - July 27, 1953 |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the 64th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement. President Harry S. Truman ordered United States military intervention in Korea on June 27, 1950, two days after the invasion of South Korea by North Korea in a deadly coordinated attack. Spanning three years of active combat on land, by sea and in the air over the Korean Peninsula, the Korean War was one of the deadliest conflicts in American history, trailing only the Civil War, World War I and II, and the Vietnam War. Nearly two million Americans served in Korea during the Korean War. According to the Department of Defense, 36,516 Americans died in Korea and 7,862 Americans are still missing in action. 131 American soldiers, 97 of them posthumously, were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery. Signed on July 27, 1953, the Korean War Armistice Agreement finally ended the war, leaving the Korean Peninsula divided at the 38th Parallel much as it had been at the close of World War II. As such, this year marks the 64th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement. Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution to honor those who served our nation during the Korean War. |
