Subject: | Resolution: Recognizing the Importance of Ensuring Access to Technology and Information for Individuals with Cognitive Disabilities |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing the importance of ensuring access to technology and information for individuals with cognitive disabilities. Approximately 28 million United States citizens have cognitive disabilities, which include intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, persistent mental illness and Alzheimer’s disease. Regardless of the form of their cognitive disability, these 28 million individuals are entitled to inclusion in our society under various federal, state and local laws. Despite these laws, millions of people with cognitive disabilities have limited access to important information and communication technologies. As part of their right to inclusion in our society, people with cognitive disabilities must have access to technology and information that is enjoyed by the rest of society. In 2014, Colorado became the first state to pass a resolution regarding the rights of people with cognitive disabilities to technology and information access. Since then, similar legislation has been passed in Maine and introduced in Missouri. As more states introduce and pass legislation on this issue, it is important that we follow their example. I ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
