Subject: | School Safety and Security Training for School Employees |
In the near future, we will be introducing legislation to amend the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L. 30, No. 14), the Public School Code, to provide for school safety and security training for school employees. The legislation requires that school entities provide their employees with training on school safety and security. The training shall address but not be limited to the following topics: situational awareness; trauma-informed education awareness; mental health awareness; suicide and bullying awareness; substance abuse awareness and emergency training drills, including fire, natural disasters, active shooter, hostage situations and bomb threats. School entities and independent contractors may provide training through the internet or other distance communication systems. School employees shall complete a minimum of three (3) hours of training every five (5) years. School employees required to undergo continuing professional education under Section 1205.2 shall receive credit toward their continuing professional education requirements if the training program has been approved by the Department of Education, in consultation with PCCD. We hope that you will join us in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
