Subject: | Criminal Justice Data and Transparency |
Many states do not have uniform criminal justice data collection processes being used by their state and local agencies, making it difficult to review and compare important trends in the criminal justice system from one jurisdiction to the next. In Pennsylvania, we are fortunate to have the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, which examines criminal justice data through its Statistical Analysis Center. I will soon introduce legislation to ensure that the reporting of data from each criminal justice entity is uniform, accurate, and readily available to the public. My bill will require the collection of certain types of information by each Clerk of Court, District Attorney, county prison, the Department of Corrections, county probation department, and the Board of Probation and Parole. My legislation will require that this uniform data be published in a modern and readily accessible format on a website. The information will be searchable in various ways so that the public can be better informed about the performance of our criminal justice system. |
