| Subject: | September 2024- Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month |
| In the near future, Senator Martin and I plan to introduce a resolution designating the month of September 2024 as “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth. The American Cancer Society estimates over 19,000 women will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and over 13,000 women will die from ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. A woman's risk of getting ovarian cancer during her lifetime is about 1 in 78. Her lifetime chance of dying from ovarian cancer is about 1 in 108. Ovarian cancer often goes undetected until it’s reached advanced stages. They may not cause early signs or symptoms, and it is difficult to screen for the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute. Over the years, both Senator Martin and I have been contacted by constituents on this important opportunity for awareness. One constituent in particular named Jay Ferraro contacted me regarding his beloved wife, Barbara, who passed away from ovarian cancer on February 20, 2023. With the help of his family, Jay started the Barbara T. Foundation; the nonprofit foundation’s purpose is based off Barbara’s last wish, to raise money to be given directly to ovarian cancer research, so women in the future would not have to suffer and die from ovarian cancer. We ask that you join us in cosponsoring this resolution to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and to show support to those suffering from ovarian cancer. |
