Subject: | Condolence Resolution for Former President Pro Tempore Henry Hager III |
We plan to introduce a condolence resolution honoring the life and achievements of former President Pro Tempore Henry George Hager III, who passed away on June 27, 2024, at the age of 90. Henry was a distinguished leader, lawyer, and politician whose presence touched countless lives throughout his career and retirement. Born on April 28, 1934, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Henry graduated from Wesleyan University and University of Pennsylvania Law School. His legal career paved the way for his public service, beginning with his role as Special Deputy Attorney General and his election as Lycoming County District Attorney. Henry later became the youngest Republican Senate Floor Leader, and rose to serve as President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania Senate, where his contributions included creating the Independent Regulatory Review Commission. He represented the 23rd district, which included Bradford, Clinton, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union Counties. Following his retirement from the Senate, Henry continued to serve the Commonwealth as the President and CEO of the Insurance Federation of Pennsylvania for 16 years where he led significant reforms in Pennsylvania’s auto and workers’ compensation laws. Beyond his political achievements, Henry’s life was filled with many passions, including golf, music, and community service. He served as Chair of the Pennsylvania Cancer Society and Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Church. In retirement, he continued to enrich his community in Fort Myers, Florida, where he served on the board of the Fiddlesticks Country Club and working as a tutor for Literacy Volunteers of Lee County. Above all, Henry deeply cherished his family. He shared a loving marriage with his late wife, Sally, with whom he raised two daughters, Hannah and Eleanor and found great joy and pride in being a grandfather to Ariana, Kaya, and Charles. His generosity of spirit and warmth touched the lives of all who knew him. In recognition of his exemplary service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, his steadfast leadership, and the many lives he touched, please join us in co-sponsoring this condolence resolution to honor the life and legacy of Henry George Hager III. |
