| Subject: | Expungement for Non-Violent Felony Convictions |
| Felonies on criminal records can haunt and stigmatize individuals who have long since paid their debt to society. These individuals have a difficult time finding jobs and housing, further increasing the likelihood of recidivism. We must address the continuing problem of criminal record expungement for those who are deserving of a fresh start and who have effectively demonstrated that their past mistakes do not define them. This is especially true for those who have a non-violent felony on their record. My legislation would require individuals to meet certain parameters to be eligible for expungement, but by doing so, they will have truly earned their second chance. It is time we create a pathway for non-violent felons to fully reintegrate into our society. Felony non-violent convictions are just as worthy for expungement as lower grade convictions. In fact, I would argue they are more necessary because of the stigma attached to a felony on an individual’s record. If they have proved to be a productive member of society, their community and their family, expungement is the only logical answer. These members of our community deserve a new start, so please join me in helping them earn one. |
