| Subject: | Removing Driver’s License Suspension for Failure to Make Custody Payments |
| In a fair and just society, punishments appropriately fit crimes. Sadly, in Pennsylvania, this is not the case for the thousands of citizens who have their driver’s licenses suspended for failing to make child custody payments. Unfortunately, this penalty makes it difficult for these individuals to travel to work, which further decreases their ability to make custody payments. And, as is often the case, this inappropriate punishment adversely impacts low income individuals more than other citizens. That is why I am introducing legislation to remove license suspension for failing to make custody payments. Last year the state legislature worked together to remove license suspensions for other non-driving offenses, but more can be done. My legislation builds on this prior work and fits into a larger national trend. Join me in supporting this legislation and send a message to the people of Pennsylvania that we to help them and work to make punishments more accurately fit crimes. |
