MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 14, 2019 09:16 AM
From: Representative Brandon J. Markosek
To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing May 2019 as “Better Hearing and Speech Month”

On average, the symptoms of hearing loss in children can go undetected for one year or longer. It is no surprise then that the number one barrier to early identification of communication, speech, and language disorders is a lack of awareness about the warning signs among parents. In older adults, untreated hearing loss can lead to an increased risk of dementia.

Founded in 1927 by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Better Hearing and Speech Month strives to change this. By promoting awareness of hearing and speech disorders and encouraging people to carefully analyze their own hearing and speech, as well as that of their children, problems can be detected early and treatment to improve one’s quality of life can begin.

It has been said that our ability to communicate is what connects us. Each May, ASHA seeks to preserve that connection through education. In honor of the dedication that ASHA and its network of audiologists and speech-language pathologists has shown in educating the public on hearing and speech problems, I am introducing a resolution recognizing the month of May 2019 as “Better Hearing and Speech Month” in Pennsylvania.

Too often our ability to speak, hear, and be heard is taken for granted. Please join me in highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention in the treatment of hearing and speech disorders by supporting this resolution.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jessica Luce in my Harrisburg office at (717)772-4511 or via email at jluce@pahouse.net.
