Subject: | Your Vote Shouldn't Cost your Job |
There is too high a percentage of registered voters that don’t vote. For the most part, this is due to the demands of a person’s work schedule. When faced with the choice of voting or a paycheck, the paycheck almost always wins. It doesn’t need to be this way. My bill will authorize two hours of time off work on an election day if an employee does not have enough time to vote before or after work. Leave from work to vote could be provided at the beginning or end of the regular work day. A different time could also be proposed if both the employer and employee agree. So this change of law would work for everybody, the employee would be required to provide adequate notice of leave before taking time off. An employee could also be required by the employer to provide proof of voting or the attempt to vote. Democracy is at its best when more people participate. |
