Subject: | Regional Police Consolidation Co-sponsorship Memo |
Pennsylvania has more police forces than any other state in the nation, and yet, in many communities those departments employ part time officers making barely over minimum wage. With more than 1,100 police forces employing more than 27,000 officers we have the second highest number of police forces in the country and twice as many as the national average. It is time we gather some data on whether or not this system of state, regional, county, and municipal police departments is serving the Commonwealth well, or whether cost savings and professionalism may be achieved by incentivizing consolidation of departments. This resolution will direct the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to research the potential cost savings, potential sources of funding, and what stumbling blocks currently exist in consolidation efforts across the Commonwealth, please join me in cosponsoring this important study. |
