Subject: | Requiring Tax Collectors, Upon Notice, to Send Tax Notices to Mortgage Servicers |
Currently, tax collectors are only required to send a tax notice directly to a property owner. Once received, the property owner is responsible for faxing or mailing a copy of their tax notice to their mortgage servicer. While some tax collectors send a copy to the mortgage servicer as a courtesy, this is not the case throughout the Commonwealth. This creates uncertainty and sometimes property tax bills are inadvertently left unpaid. To remedy this, the new law would require that if requested by the mortgage servicer, a notice will be sent within ten days to the servicer and the property owner notified. Once established, the tax collector will follow this procedure the next year and all years going forward. Hopefully this will bring a degree of uniformity and avoid needless confusion and unpaid bills. Last session this was House Bill 467. Thanks for supporting this legislation. |
