| Subject: | Subject: Resolution Honoring Former Pennsylvania Senator Harris Wofford |
| Harris Wofford was a civil rights activist and lifelong public servant. Many saw Wofford as a visionary who was ahead-of-his-time and spent his life striving to make a better life for all living in Pennsylvania, the United States, and across the planet. Harris Wofford was born on April 9th, 1926 in New York City. He served in the United States Army Air Corps and graduated from Yale Law School. He used his knowledge of Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent teachings to aide President John F. Kennedy and civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. Harris Wofford also co-founded the Peace Corps and served as president of Bryn Mawr College for nearly a decade in the 1970s. As a United States Senator from Pennsylvania, a one-time Pennsylvania Secretary of Labor and Industry, and the former chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, Harris Wofford spent years of his life dedicated to our Commonwealth. In 2012, Wofford received the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Barack Obama. Harris Wofford is proceeded in death by his wife, Claire Wofford (née Lindgren). He is survived by his three children, six grandchildren, and husband Matthew Charlton. Please honor the life of a Pennsylvania icon and support this resolution. |
