MEMORANDUM

Subject: Prohibiting the Following of School Buses too Closely

There has been over 1,200 fatalities in school transportation accidents over the last decade. Action is needed to reduce those numbers.

Current law requires drivers to stop at least ten feet before reaching a school bus when the red signal lights and side stop arm of the bus are activated. However, there is no provision requiring that motorist maintain a similar distance from a school bus in motion.

My legislation creates that distance requirement of ten feet from a moving bus and also requires that the rear of any school bus manufactured after 2019 must display an exterior label, sticker, or sign stating, “At all times stay back a minimum of 10 feet. It is the law.”

This legislation will result in fewer accidents involving school buses and safer travels for students.

Introduced as HB1685
