Subject: | Resolution Designating March 2019 as “Disabilities Awareness Month” |
One in five Americans have a disability, which translates to 56.7 million individuals. In comparison, Pennsylvania is home to 1.4 million people with disabilities who are under 65 years of age. Although individuals with disabilities are provided protections under both federal and state law, discriminatory practices still persist in areas such as housing, employment, and public accommodations. The purpose of our resolution is to recognize the prevalence of inequities within our society regarding the treatment of individuals with disabilities, as well as to acknowledge the efforts made throughout history to institute civil protections for all Americans. Please join our bipartisan effort to designate March 2019 as “Disabilities Awareness Month” and help us raise awareness of the injustices that the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable citizens face despite protections the law affords them. |
